The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat has issued an open invitation to Congress leader Hardik Patel to swap outfits ahead of the December assembly election. The AAP’s Gujarat chief Gopal Italia today invited Patel to join the AAP instead of complaining to Congress.
Italia said, “If Hardik Patel is not liking in Congress, he should join a like-minded party like AAP. Instead of complaining to Congress, wasting his time, he should contribute here.” Italia further said Congress is not a place for dedicated people like him.
Patel denied rumours of him leaving the Congress. However, he said that there were small fights and blame games within the party. He said, “I have given my 100 per cent to Congress till now. We will work together to make Gujarat a better place.”
On Thursday, Patel accused Gujarat Congress leaders of harassing him. He also said he had taken up the issue with Rahul Gandhi several times. However, no action has been taken by Congress to address his grievances.
The AAP and the Congress are busy preparing for the December assembly polls. The elections will be held in Gujarat to elect 182 members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Both parties are preparing rigorously for ousting the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), which has won every state poll since 1995. The BJP has been in power in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state since 1995.
Patel emerged as the leader of the Patidar agitation in 2015, demanding reservations for the community in Gujarat. Later on, he joined the Congress. He was the centrepiece of the 2017 Assembly polls. However, the outcome of the 2017 Assembly polls was in favour of the BJP, winning 99 seats in the House of 182. Subsequently, the Congress tally of 77 fell to 65 due to defeat in by-polls.
