A day after leaving Congress, Jyotiraditya Scindia joins BJP

A day after resigning from the Congress, former union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday joined Bhartiya Janta Party in presence of party chief JP Nadda. BJP party chief expressed joy over Scindia’s decision and said it felt like a family member came back home. On the occasion Nadda also remembered Scindia’s grandmother late Vijaya Raje Scindia, who was one of the the party’s co-founders.

Soon after being welcomed into the BJP clan, Scindia told reporters, “I would like to thank JP Nadda ji, PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah that they invited me to their family and gave me a place in it.”

Scindia’s switch to BJP brought joy to his aunt and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who on Wednesday welcomed her nephew to the party and praised him for his “strength of character and courage”. Ms Raje, a senior BJP leaders, took to Twitter and said that it is good to be on the “same team”.

Vasundhara Raje wrote, “If Rajmata Sahab (Mr Scindia’s grandmother Vijaya Raje Scindia) was here today, she would be elated to see you put the nation first. I admire your strength of character and courage. It’s good to be on the same team. Welcome to the BJP.”

On Tuesday, Scindia exited the party and his loyalist comprising 22 MLAs followed suit. It left Congress-led Madhya Pradesh government in political turmoil. The young leader resigned from the Congress mentioning “this path has been drawing out over the last year”.

“Having been a primary member of the Congress party for last 18 years, it is now time for me to move on. I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress and as you well know, this path has been drawing out over the last year,” Scindia said in his resignation letter dated 9 March.

Expressing his discontent towards Kamal Nath-led Congress government, Scindia also said, “the dream we saw for Madhya Pradesh has been shattered in 18 months.”

Commenting over sudden shift in Scindia’s political inclination, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh accused BJP for this planned move as Scindia, once a close ally of Rahul Gandhi, resigned from the party minutes after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Singh asked “We want to know why Bengaluru is used every time to destabilise governments?”

Repeating his allegation, Singh told reporters that on Monday the BJP had arranged three chartered planes for flying out of some MLAs loyal to Scindia.

Singh added that BJP was growing increasingly restless since the Kamal Nath government started tracking down various mafias and exposing their links with the BJP leaders. He said “We (the state government) are exposing Vyapam scam, e-tendering scam, Madhyam scam. In the honey-trap case, BJP men were found to be involved. This will be exposed.” JM Scindia’s decision not only left the Congress in a tough spot but also forced it to rethink its leadership strategy.
