7.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Turkey And Syria, 560+ Dead

A powerful earthquake killed 568 people and injured 2,300 in Turkey and Syria. Several provinces were affected by the quake and nearly 1,700 buildings collapsed.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey was followed by another powerful tremor that was felt in various provinces in the area and caused some structures to collapse, according to sources.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was around 26 kilometers (16 miles) from the neighborhood of Nurdagi and 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Gaziantep.

The US Geological Survey determined that its center was 18 kilometers (11 miles) below the surface.

Pazarcik, a town in Kahramanmaras province, served as the administrative center for Turkey’s disaster and emergency management organization.

According to Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, 1,700 buildings fell and at least 2,300 people were hurt across the 10 impacted regions.

In a statement, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan cited directives from President Joe Biden and stated that the US was considering measures to assist the most impacted.

At a televised news conference in Ankara, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu stated, “We have activated a fourth level alert, which requires international help.”

From the Syrian towns of Aleppo and Hama to Diyarbakir, Turkey, more than 330 kilometers (200 miles) to the northeast, buildings were reported to have collapsed.

After a 7.8-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in southeast Turkey on Monday, at least 237 people died in government-controlled areas of Syria, according to the health ministry.

According to a statement from the ministry, 237 people died and 639 were injured in the regions of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, and Tartus.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the deaths caused by the powerful earthquake that shook Turkey and the surrounding countries and claimed more than 100 people.

The Prime Minister expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of life and property in Turkey and declared that India supports Turkey at this difficult period.
