67 Leaders To Join BRICS Summit 2023 From Africa, India, Global South

The BRICS summit is a meeting of leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This year, the summit will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 22 to 24, 2023.

The theme of the summit is unity, and it aims to bring together leaders from Africa and the global South to address shared challenges and opportunities.

The main summit will be hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on August 23, and it will be followed by the BRICS-Africa outreach and BRICS-plus dialogues on August 24. The summit will also include a business forum and a retreat for the BRICS leaders.

South Africa, for the third time, is taking the lead in organizing the summit. The theme for this year is –

“BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism.”

The agenda for the summit focuses on five core priorities:

  1. Equitable Transition & Climate Change
  2. Education And Skill Development
  3. Leveraging African Trade Opportunities
  4. Post-Pandemic Recovery
  5. Strengthening Multilateralism.

Many countries have expressed interest in joining the BRICS group, which shows the group’s dedication to its core values of championing the global South, advocating for multilateralism, and driving global economic stability and growth.

The BRICS outreach/plus concept, pioneered by South Africa in 2013, aims to include African nations in the summit to promote unity within the global South.

China expanded this concept during its presidency in 2022, extending it to foreign ministers’ meetings to enhance dialogue with like-minded nations.

In anticipation of the summit, South Africa has convened a meeting of National Security Advisors, inviting all 15 countries that participated in the foreign ministers’ gathering earlier in June 2023.
