Let us tell you that Azad had resigned from the party on 26 August expressing displeasure against Rahul Gandhi and the high command.
He wrote in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi that the party was performing well under your leadership, but after Rahul Gandhi became the Vice President in 2013, he sidelined senior and experienced leaders of the party and showed childish behavior by tearing the ordinance. All decisions are being taken by Rahul Gandhi and personal assistants.
After resigning from the Congress, Azad has also announced plans to form a new party . He said that he would form a new party in Jammu and Kashmir and the possibilities at the national level would be explored later. With this, he also denied the speculations of joining the BJP.
Let us tell you that assembly elections can be held in Jammu and Kashmir this year. This will be the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after becoming a union territory.
Azad was born on March 7, 1949 in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir and did his MSc from Kashmir University.
He was associated with the Congress since the 1970s. He became the President of Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress in 1975 and in 1980 he was made the National President of Youth Congress.
He won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1980 from Washim, Maharashtra. He was later made a Union Minister in 1982.
Azad was a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra from 1990-1996 . After this, from 1996 to 2006, he reached the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir.
He was made the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2005, but Azad’s government fell in 2008 after the PDP withdrew support. He was also the Health Minister in the Manmohan Singh government.
Azad was made the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in 2014 and was again sent to the Rajya Sabha in 2015.
