The Congress party is convening a second Opposition unity meeting in Bengaluru, Karnataka on July 17-18. At least 24 political parties, including eight new ones, have extended their support to present a united front against the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Notably, previously BJP-allied parties, KDMK ( Kongu Desa Makkal Katchi) and MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), will also be attending the meeting.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge have invited top opposition leaders to participate in the meeting. The meeting follows a previous opposition meeting held in Patna in June.
The Congress party has successfully held a meeting with various opposition leaders to discuss important issues threatening democracy.
They have agreed to unite and fight together in the next General Elections. The Congress President has emphasized the importance of continuing these discussions and finding solutions to the challenges facing the country.
The leaders have been invited to attend a meeting and dinner in Bengaluru on July 17, followed by a continuation of the meeting on July 18. Lalu Prasad, the RJD chief, has also confirmed his attendance.
The first Opposition Unity meeting was held in Patna and was attended by more than 15 parties, including prominent leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Mamata Banerjee, and M K Stalin.
The meeting was significant for opposition parties, but there were some controversies that overshadowed the event.
One controversy involved BSP chief Mayawati, who refused to share the stage with RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. Mayawati had previously accused Yadav of being corrupt, and she did not want to be seen as legitimizing his image.
Another controversy involved RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary, who was not invited to the meeting. Chaudhary is the son of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, and he is seen as a potential challenger to Yadav in the upcoming elections.
The Congress is believed to have been behind Chaudhary’s exclusion from the meeting, as they did not want to see him gain too much power.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi wasn’t invited to the opposition party meet, for some unknown reasons.

Finally, there were some conflicts between AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Kejriwal accused Gandhi of being a dynasty, while Gandhi accused Kejriwal of being a “fake” leader.
These conflicts prevented the opposition parties from reaching a clear common decision or opinion on a united strategy for the upcoming elections. Thus they’re ready for the 2nd opposition party’s meeting.
