2 Blasts Near Amritsar’s Golden Temple Within 30 Hours

At least 5 people injured in 2 blasts near Amritsar’s Golden Temple in Punjab. One explosion occurred on Saturday night another bloated on Monday morning.

On May 6 and 7, 2023, two low-intensity blasts occurred in the vicinity of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, India. 

The first blast occurred on Saturday night near an eatery, and the second occurred on Monday morning, just hours after a person was injured in the first blast. 

The second blast happened when an unidentified person hung a crude bomb with a thread from the Heritage Street parking lot. 

One person received minor injuries in the leg in the second blast. The police, including police commissioner and forensic teams, have reached the spot to investigate the matter.

The cause of the first blast is yet to be determined, but it is suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED) blast using potassium nitrate and sulfur. 

The blast was heard within a one-kilometer radius of the Golden Temple, and the glass facades of some buildings were damaged. A few girls traveling in an auto-rickshaw were hit by shards of glass and sustained minor injuries.

The blasts have raised concerns about the security of religious places, particularly those of the Hindu and Sikh communities in India. 

Hindu temples in India are often targeted by terrorist organizations. In 2002, a terrorist attack took place in the Akshardham Temple in Gujarat, killing 30 people and injuring over 80. 

In 2006, a series of bomb blasts took place in various Hindu temples in India, killing over 200 people and injuring hundreds more.

The recent blasts in Amritsar have raised concerns about the security of religious places and the need for better measures to protect them. 

The authorities need to take strict measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future and ensure the safety of the public, especially those visiting religious places.
