12 Major Fasts And Festivals Of This Saawan 2023 With Dates

The month of Shravan, also known as Sawan, is a significant time for Indian culture. This year, the celebrations will last for 59 days instead of the usual one month, from July 4 to August 31.

This is due to the occurrence of an extra month called Adhik Maas (Mal Maas). During this month, devotees observe fasts and celebrate various festivals such as Hariyali Teej, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, and Naag Panchami. Here is a list of 12 major holy festivals in this Sawan month.

List of 12 Major Holy Festivals & Their Dates

1. Kamika Ekadashi

A day when devotees observe a fast to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu. By offering sacred items like Tulsi leaves and milk, they believe they will be blessed with good health and wealth.

2. Shravan Somvar Upwaas

Devotees of Lord Shiva observe fasts on Mondays during the month of Shravan. It is believed that their wishes will be fulfilled. Married women fast for the well-being of their families, while unmarried women fast to find a suitable match.

3. Mangala Gauri Upwaas

Maa Gauri devotees observe fasts every Tuesday during Sawan to ensure a happy married life, prosperity, and the blessing of children.

4. Hariyali Teej

Celebrated on the third day of the bright half of the month of Shravan, this festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is known as Hariyali Teej because it falls during the monsoon season when everything is green and lush.

5. Naag Panchami

On this day, people worship serpent Gods and offer milk to snakes. Women pray for the well-being of their brothers and family members. The festival falls on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Shravan.

6. Dashama Vrat

This 10-day fasting festival is celebrated in Gujarat. Devotees observe fasting and rituals dedicated to goddess Dashama for ten days, seeking her blessings.

7. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

Observed on the 11th lunar day of the waxing moon in the month of Shravan, this Ekadashi vrat is observed to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu for moksha (liberation) after death.

8. Varalakshmi Vrat

This vrat is observed for goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. It is observed during the bright half of the month of Shravan to seek the blessings of goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity.

9. Raksha Bandhan

A major Hindu festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Shravan, sisters tie a sacred thread called rakhi around their brothers’ wrists, and brothers promise to protect and take care of their sisters.

10. Gayatri Jayanti

Celebrated as the birth anniversary of Goddess Gayatri, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Devotees worship her to seek health, wealth, wisdom, and prosperity.

11. Kalki Jayanti

The Kalki Jayanti day marks the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu’s future avatar, Kalki, who is believed to appear at the end of the Kaliyuga era.

12. Shravana/Narali Purnima

Also known as Narali Purnima in Maharashtra, this day is dedicated to worshiping Varun Dev, the God of Sea. People offer coconuts to seek protection from mishaps in the sea.
