For the first time in history, 108 officers from 1992 batch to 2006 batch, are going to hold command posts. They will lead army units, in various Arms & Services.
108 female officers have been elevated to the rank of colonel and will be given command posts, a first for the Indian Army.
When they reach the rank of Colonel, they will take command of groups exactly like their male counterparts do.
All officers in the armed forces are not selected for positions up to the rank of Colonel. The selection board deemed 108 women officers “qualified for command duties,” according to sources.
By the end of this month, the first batch of such postings would be made available.
From January 9 onward, the Army held a selection board at Army headquarters to choose Lt. Colonels who would be promoted.
In total, 244 female officers were under consideration for promotion out of 108 openings. Engineers, Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (EME), Signals, Army Air Defence, Intelligence Corps, Army Service Corps, and Army Ordnance Corps are among the Army branches that accept female officers.
According to the sources, the administration approved the 108 openings to ensure gender equity in the Army.
In order to ensure a fair selection procedure, 60 female officers were also invited to participate as observers.
They can aim for bigger positions and higher ranks now that the Army has granted women officers Permanent Commission (PC) on par with their male counterparts as of November 2021.
All female officers who have been given PC are putting themselves through tough military tasks and specialized training to prepare them for higher leadership positions.
Five female officers have qualified for the coveted Defence Services Technical Staff Course (DSTSC) and Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) exams for the first time, which are administered each September.
These five women officers will complete a one-year programme and receive proper consideration when applying for command postings.
In a number of aviation units, female combat fighter pilots have joined their male colleagues.
In advance of deployment, female officers in the Signals, Army Air Defence, and Engineers are already making a name for themselves.
Induction of women into the Corps of Artillery is imminent. A female officer was recently stationed at a position in the Siachen Glacier.
