Modi Speech Expunged For The First Time

In a rare instance, the speech of Narendra Modi has gone through an expunging or alteration process, confirms the local media. The person doing so is Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu who is known to have done this before.

However, having to do this for the PM like Modi, who is extremely particular about what he says or does not say, is a shock. Naidu is known to have removed portions from Modi’s motion of Thanks.

Modi had made the remark while putting up a ferocious attack on the opposition on the topic of National Population Register (NPR). Modi openly accused Congress of making a U-turn and said that the party had brought NPR in 2010.

Strangely, Naidu also removed portions from senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad’s statement in response to PM Modi’s speech. Azad had said that while Congress was in favour of giving citizenship to migrants fleeing neighbouring countries due to persecution, the party was against framing a law based on religion.

Expunging is a common practice when you don’t want to keep a record of rather unpleasant conversations or rebuttles to keep the records civil for the Rajya Sabha. Certain words are considered completely ‘unparliamentarily’ and therefore are automatically removed from the various speeches. Most of these refer to the Gandhi family.
