Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan: India’s Covid19 vaccine likely in first quarter of 2021
On Monday Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that Indiaâ€™s first vaccine for Covid-19 is likely to be roll out for public use in first quarter of 2021. Dr. Vardhan said, â€śResearch to develop vaccine is being done expeditiously. There are at least three viable such vaccine candidates that are in the phase of clinical trials right now in the country. Weâ€™re hopeful that within 1st quarter of 2021 it will be available.â€ť
The Union Health Minister relayed the information while he was speaking at launch of online vaccine portal by ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research). The dedicated portal provides details of the research studies going on in the country related to Covid-19, vaccine development in India and also internationally, along with vaccine development history in India.
Regarding the launch of portal Dr. Vardhan said, â€śICMR has always been at the forefront of health research in the country and is now leading the country in tackling the unprecedented pandemic through scientific rigour and innovation. To disseminate the vaccine-related information, the exclusive portal will be helpful in creating awareness among the masses. I hope all query of common people on the vaccine development process would be addressed through this portal.â€ť
In India the three leading Covid-19 vaccine candidates are Covishield, Covaxin and ZyCov-D. All these vaccines are mentioned in the portal and the detailed information on technology being used to manufacture these vaccines, their completed trials and the trials which are currently in progress. Furthermore, there is a link on portal regarding international vaccine candidates that leads to WHO website. There are also links to research publications website that provide information on vaccine trials process in India and the studies details.
Portal also provides information on vaccines for diseases like HPV(Human Papilloma Virus), Shigella, Cholera, Hepatitis and Typhoid. There is also a section about use of BCG vaccine (vaccine for childhood tuberculosis) for Covid-19, that provides link to opinion paper on ICMRâ€™s medical journal, The Indian Journal of Medical Research.
